Fluency

Fluency is the ability to read a text, accurately, quickly and with expression.

A fluent reader is one that has built their stamina for reading long or complex texts.

Fluent readers read aloud effortlessly and with expression! The words flow naturally as if they are having a conversation.

A reader who reads slowly, word for word, hasn’t developed their fluency skills.

Reading fluency is directly connected to word recognition and comprehension.

This is why I don’t recommend audio books, unless it’s used as an example of what good reading SOUNDS like.

Otherwise, children should have access to text that they want to read and can read!
