Vocabulary

Vocabulary is words that we must understand to communicate effectively.

There are Four Types of Vocabulary:

  • Listening

  • Speaking

  • Reading

  • Writing

Vocabulary  plays a critical role in the reading process and is critical to reading comprehension.

Vocabulary refers to the words that we need to know to understand what we hear.

Readers cannot understand what they are reading, if they do not know what the words mean.

Vocabulary is critical to reading comprehension.

Children learn the meaning of words indirectly through experiences, daily.

A more rigorous understanding of vocabulary, comes from direct and indirect instruction that meets the needs of all learners.

As children read more advanced texts, they must also learn the meaning of those new words.
