Print Awareness

Print awareness is also called concept of print. It is understanding that print means letters and words.

Meaning is conveyed through words.

-Printed words are separated by spaces

- Some words in print look longer because they have more letters than words.

Print awareness teaches that the use of books consists of:

• How to turn pages

• How to find the top and bottom of the page

• How to identify the front and back covers

Understanding how print works is aided interaction with adults and other children by;

• Pointing out words

• Pointing out letters

• And recognizing other features of print
